15 April - 8 July 2018

Toi Pōneke Arts Centre with producer Vicky Pope and director Rob Sarkies are delighted to announce Harry Meech as our 2018 screenwriter for the WRITE ROOM residency with his work Inheritance

Inheritance was the most cinematic script we read.  A combination of strengths in its writing, story and characters made it standout ", says Rob Sarkies.

Harry is a writer and theatre practitioner originally from Wainuiomata. In 2009 he won the New Zealand Young Playwright's award for his play Plains. This work has been produced in the USA and excerpts have been produced in Spain. Recently it was produced by the Remote Fiction Theatre Company in Hamilton.

Over the last few years Harry has become interested in writing for other scripted mediums. In 2016 Harry undertook a MA in Creative Writing at the International Institute of Modern Letters. He studied writing for the screen in-depth, and wrote the first drafts of his screenplay.

Over 50 submissions were received for the Wellington based residency. “The number and quality of submissions points to a strong talent pool of aspiring and experienced screenwriters within Wellington but also highlights their need for support,”  says Vicky Pope. “A room to work in, with some financial support to help cover expenses goes a long way towards enabling screenwriters to focus on their writing. We’re thrilled to be working with the Toi Pōneke team to offer this opportunity."

Harry will be based at Toi Pōneke for 3 months from April to July.
