Application Deadline 17 May 2021

Write Room Emerging Film Producer Wellington Internship 2021
Internship runs part time from 10 June - March 2022

We are offering an emerging film producer from Wellington the opportunity to join the selector/mentor team to ‘window in’ on the selections and script development process.

Write Room is a screenwriter residency programme held in partnership with Toi Pōneke Art Centre and Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga -The New Zealand Film Commission.

Each year the programme offers a Wellington-based writer the opportunity to undertake a 3-month residency at Toi Pōneke Art Centre to complete a draft of their screenplay with the support of experienced film mentors.  At the end of the residency the writer’s work is presented to the industry via a read-through workshop.

This year’s Write Room selectors and mentors are Director Rob Sarkies (Scarfies, Out of the Blue, Consent), Producer Vicky Pope (Savage, Gardening with Soul, Two Little Boys) and Writer/Director Briar Grace Smith (Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Wai - Cousins, Waru, The Strength of Water).

This is a chance for a Wellington based early-career producer to deepen understanding and personal instincts in:

  • assessing the calibre of writing, genre, themes, budget, packaging/financing potential of dramatic film projects.

  • the role of a producer in the creative process and tools for supporting script development.

  • collaborations with other producers or creative partners and how to harness  the input of others in a way that is meaningful for writers.

  • insight into the read-through process and how it can inform development.

The intern will need to be available in Wellington to spend a minimum of 25 hours on script selection from 10 June - 9  July 2021,  be present for at least 3 development meetings during the residency (Sept - Nov 2021) and assist with facilitating and coordinating the script read-through workshop at the end of the programme (Feb or March 2022 TBC.) Hours for this internship are flexible and can be worked in and around other work commitments.

A stipend of $1500 will be awarded for this internship.

At the completion of the internship the candidate will be required to provide a report and feedback on their experience.

Submissions  for this opportunity are due by 17 May 2021

Alongside support from Toi Pōneke Arts Centre and Wellington City Council, in 2021 the Write Room programme has received funding from Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga New Zealand Film Commission’s Screen Sector Capability Fund. The Fund supports the New Zealand screen sector to develop the business and technical capability to meet the challenges of a COVID-19 and post COVID-19 environment and is part of the New Zealand Government’s Screen Sector Recovery package.
