Listening to Lines

Listening to Lines is a collaboration inspired by Richard Long’s 1967 work titled A Line Made by Walking, included in Tim Ingold’s book Lines: A Brief History (Routledge, 2016). Tim Ingold noted that Richard Long’s lines are not made by additive or reductive activities that are usually associated with trails or traces, but by continuous and repetitive activities. This resonates with the practice of three Wellington-based artists whose works are based on repetitive methods, through an abstract concept and physical labour dialectic.

Yon Yi Sohn, Moonhee Han, and Eun Jung Jang collaborate in this exhibition of drawing, painting, embroidery and installation of ‘lines’ - the basic element of visual storytelling. Yon Yi Sohn explains the concept behind the exhibition title: “As our works develop, we are constantly responding to the ways that the patterns emerge and colours interact - I see this as a relationship between the teller of the tale and the tale itself being told. As Gerhard Richter, my inspiration, once said, “the pictures started to instruct me”, and I listen to my lines.

Yon Yi Sohn is a visual artist, creating a minimalistic, abstract body of works through drawing, painting, printmaking, and installation. She has exhibited for many years in Wellington, NZ, and London, UK, and her works are in private collections in New Zealand and the United States. She holds a MA in Painting from Royal College of Art, London, and BFA from Massey University, Wellington.

Moonhee Han is a Bojagi patchwork artist and tutor. She participated in many exhibitions both in Korea and New Zealand and curated Bojagi exhibitions in Wellington in 2018 and 2019. She holds a BA in design (First Class Honours) from Massey University, Wellington.

Eun Jung Jang is a Bojagi patchwork artist. She started Bojagi patchwork with Moonhee Han’s Bojagi class in the late 2010s, and participated in many group exhibitions at various venues in Wellington. She is currently leading a weekly Bojagi club called Atti Poneke (Atti means friends in Korean). She holds a MFA in advertising design from Academy of Art University, San Francisco, USA, and a BFA in visual art design from Chung Ju University, Korea. This exhibition is the result of cumulative efforts by the three artists who were granted the Toi Poneke Arts Centre visual art residency 2023.
