2024 Visual Artist in residence announcement

Toi Pōneke Arts Centre is proud to announce Mitchell Manual as our 2024 Visual Artist in Residence.

Mitchell Manuel is a digital artist of Cook Island Māori (Ngāti Toora, Ngāti Apai, Ngāti Taraare) Tahitian, Scottish (clan Brown/Broun) and Portuguese descent. He was born and raised in Tāmaki-Makaurau Auckland, and now lives in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Manuel is an innovative, multi-talented creative with a background in film and television (actor, script writer, Gofta award winner), digital textile design and fashion.

Ira Tangata Ira Atua

Stevei Houkāmau is the 2021 Toi Pōneke Visual Artist in Residence. Her uku (clay) practice is distinctive for its carved surface designs that draw upon the indigenous tattoo practices of tā moko and tātau. Ira Tangata Ira Atua springs from research into the artist’s whakapapa. By acknowledging and celebrating her whakapapa, Houkāmau unwraps narratives that will be retold through uku, projection and soundscape.

Toi Pōneke Arts Centre Visual Arts Residency 2018

Toi Pōneke is pleased to announce the recipient of our inaugural Visual Arts Residency, Johanna Mechen. Working in video and photography, Johanna’s recent work has focused on engagement and participation with a site and its community in order to tell ecological, historical, and cultural stories. Johanna’s project involves exploring a domestic site, motherhood and connection to place.
