Toi Pōneke Arts Centre and Victoria University’s New Zealand School of Music —Te Kōkī (NZSM) are delighted to announce Kieran Monaghan as the 2024 Creative New Zealand/NZSM/ Toi Pōneke Sonic Artist-in -Residence.
Kieran Monaghan (he/him) is predominantly, and persistently, a drummer and percussionist of found sounds. He calls Te Whanganui-a-Tara /Wellington home. His first crude musical steps were in the late 80’s, playing drums in southern punk rock bands.
Join sound artist Ben Leonard (BJ Leo) and NZSM associate professor Dugal McKinnon as they demonstrate the Iko icosahedral speaker and discuss working with spatialisation and 3d audio, along with Ben's work on spectral fission.

Toi Pōneke Arts Centre and Victoria University’s New Zealand School of Music —Te Kōkī (NZSM) are delighted to announce Ben Leonard as the 2023 Toi Pōneke Sound Artist in Residence.
Ben Leonard is a sonic artist, musician and composer based in Te Whanganui ā Tara (Wellington). He is a recent graduate of the sonic arts programme at Te Kōkī/NZSM, where he focused on ambisonic and spectral techniques.
As part of his exhibition Little Portals, Cris will be activating his sound installation of mechatronic letter boxes which will interact in real time with the musicians live in the gallery for this unique sound event.
The 2022 Toi Pōneke – New Zealand School of Music Sound Artist-in-Residence, Dr. Cristohper Ramos Flores, presents the works produced during his residency. Little Portals is an audio and visual ensemble. Letterboxes collected from different points in Wellington were modified to work as loudspeakers and mechatronic instruments with small video players; acting as a miniature audio and visual orchestra that performs works composed for the exhibition.

Composer and performer Cory Champion works with the recording and amplification of cymbals, drums and drum machines to create fluid soundscapes, exploiting blurred textures between acoustic and synthesised sources. These percussion instruments are also amplified in the gallery space as sculptural works able to be played, continually modulating Champion’s immersive, harmonic soundscapes.
